What is eadgifu of wessex?

Eadgifu of Wessex, also known as Edith or Editha, was the wife of King Edward the Elder of England and the mother of King Edmund I. She was born sometime in the late 9th century, and little is known about her life before her marriage to Edward.

Eadgifu was a member of the West Saxon royal family, the daughter of Earl Sigehelm of Kent. Her marriage to Edward likely took place in the early 10th century, and they had several children together. She played an important role in her husband's reign and was known for her piety and generosity.

After Edward's death in 924, Eadgifu became a widow and continued to play a significant role in the kingdom as mother to the new king, Edmund I. However, she had to contend with political turmoil and threats to her family's rule, including the assassination of her son in 946.

Eadgifu lived to see her grandson, King Edred, ascend to the throne in 946. She died sometime after this, but the exact date is not known. She is buried in Winchester Cathedral, alongside her husband Edward and son Edmund.
